March Travel: Palm Beach

There’s no denying the connection between New York and Florida. Whether permanently or simply for a weekend escape, Northeasterners have been migrating from the snowy North to the sunny South for decades. We now present: the best of Palm Beach.

Historic Palm Beach is a longtime favorite escape for the elite and is home to some of country’s most expensive properties. This island paradise is ideal for the sophisticated and swanky set.

STAY: A Palm Beach institution, {1.} The Breakers, One South County Road, is a grandeur resort with a private beach, five oceanfront pools, golf course, tennis courts, nine restaurants and plenty of on-site activities to keep the kids entertained. Another quintessential property, {2.} The Brazilian Court, 301 Australian Avenue, is both luxurious and tranquil.

EAT: Lunch like a local; pick up a sub from Sandwiches by the Sea, 363 South County Road, or grab a bite at {3.} Hamburger Heaven, 314 South Country Road, a diner that’s been open since 1945. For dinner, try year-old, Buccan, 350 South County Road, a progressive American grill with a tapas-style menu, or {4.} Jade Kitchen, 422 Northwood Road #A, a neighborhood bistro restaurant located just over the bridge in Northwood Village. Cap off your night with a cocktail at either Cafe L’Europe, 331 South County Road, or Michael R. McCarty’s, 50 Cocoanut Row #105, and then hit the dance floor at Cucina Dell’Arte, 257 Royal Poinciana Way.

DO: Learn about Palm Beach’s history and its founding father at The Flagler Museum, One Whitehall Way, or view monumental sculptures hidden among greenery at the {5.} Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens, 253 Barcelona Road. Practice your stroke and swing at one of the 100-plus golf courses in Palm Beach County. Among the best are The Champion Course at PGA National, 400 Ave of the Champions, Palm Beach Par 3, 2345 South Ocean Boulevard, and The Breakers Rees Jones Course, 1550 Flagler Parkway.

Top US cities for stretching your travel dollar

If you want to get the biggest bang for your buck when traveling in the US this year, then you better head to Orlando, Florida, according to a study by Hotwire.com.

The seventh annual Hotwire Travel Value Index features the top 10 cities where consumers can find the best combination of value, entertainment options and attractions throughout 2012. This years index is dominated by Florida cities, making it an overall value state, while newcomers Charlotte and Albuquerque offer low prices to make their way into the top 10.

The Hotwire Travel Value Index is based on a statistical model combining both in-house and third-party research. Hotwire evaluates the top 75 US leisure markets, rating them across three individual categories to generate an overall ranking for consumer vacation value. The formula includes:

  • Low prices on air, rental car and hotel (50 percent of overall score)
  • Discounts on air, rental car and hotel (25 percent of overall score)
  • Affordable entertainment (25 percent of overall score)

Spring and summer break isnt just for the kids; people of all ages want to be able to take advantage of good weather and enjoy the relaxation of being on vacation, and they want to do so without over spending, said Clem Bason, president of the Hotwire Group. Over the years, weve found that our Travel Value Index can help point folks towards even deeper discounts than they may have thought possible. By targeting the best values, travelers can take more trips throughout the year while staying within their annual budget.

Orlando, Fla. takes first place on the 2012 Travel Value Index after maintaining its presence as a value destination over the last four years. The new Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme park further raised the entertainment value of a city already known for family fun. Tampa and Miami also make returns to the list this year for their low prices and entertainment options, making Florida an overall value state for travelers.

Charlotte, NC and Albuquerque, NM are two new cities to earn the title of value destination, each making their debut on the Travel Value Index for their overall low prices. Nicknamed The Queen City, after Queen Charlotte, the wife of King George III, Charlotte is also ranked as one of the top 100 places to live by CNNMoney because it combines the excitement of a bustling metropolis with good old fashioned southern charm. The other new city, Albuquerque, is the epicenter of Southwestern culture, and is widely recognized as one of the most diverse cities in the country. Visitors must take advantage of the excellent weather, outdoor adventures, skiing and the worlds most photographed event, the International Balloon Fiesta in October.

The majority of the cities on this years list were found to be value destinations in 2011 as well. Slipping a little into second and third place this year, Atlanta and Dallas-Fort Worth continue to offer great deals and low prices to travelers. Houston received an overall Travel Value Index score of 93 mostly for its discounts, followed by Phoenix which earned an overall score of 92 mostly because of its entertainment offerings.  Meanwhile, Denver, a fantastic option for travelers seeking outdoor adventure, maintains its presence at seventh place for the second year in a row.

According to the Hotwire Travel Value Index, the top 10 US destinations for value vacations in 2012 include:

Rapid Growth of the European Online Travel Market

In its latest “Europe Online Travel Report 2012″ Hamburg-based secondary market research firm yStats.com analyzes the European online travel market. In addition to the total European market, the report covers the largest markets Great Britain, Germany and France along with 23 additional countries in Western, Central and Eastern Europe as well as Scandinavia.

The overall development of the online travel market in Europe has been very positive. The total number of bookings through online travel agencies increased by almost 20% from 2010 to 2011. Great Britain is still expected to account for the largest share in 2013, followed by Germany and France. In 2011, the reach of online tour operators was also the highest in Great Britain, while the strongest growth was observed in Germany. In 2011, Expedia had the highest number of unique visitors in Europe, followed by Priceline.

As shown in the “Europe Online Travel Report 2012″ by yStats.com in 2011, customers in Germany preferred traditional travel agents for expensive travel arrangements and online booking for cheaper tours. Online revenue has grown considerably in this sector, while offline revenue has decreased. In France, revenue generated with online travel bookings grew as well between January and September 2011, more than the total B2C E-Commerce revenue. Additionally, B2C E-Commerce revenue in the category “Travel and Holiday Accommodation” was higher in 2011 than in the next four categories combined.Online bookings popular across the entire European region
Almost half of all Italian online customers booked their accommodation online in 2011, making this the strongest category in Italian B2C E-Commerce. In 2011, in the Netherlands online train travel planner “Nederlandse Spoorwegen” and public transport planner “9292OV.nl” were among the most frequently visited travel websites. In 2011, more than three quarters of all Danes booked their holidays online, while less than 10% used the services of a traditional travel agent. In Norway, “Travel and Holiday Accommodation” was the most popular online product category in the second quarter of 2011. According to the yStats.com “Europe Online Travel Report 2012″ almost half of all passengers in Russia had purchased their flight on a travel website, while almost one quarter had booked tickets via phone. Using the internet to buy travel arrangements or accommodation online was popular in Turkey in 2011.Key Findings
- Online travel agency bookings grew by almost +20% in Europe in 2011 compared to 2010.

The UK is projected to remain the largest share of Europe’s online travel market in 2013, followed by Germany and France.

In 2011, German vacation bookers preferred buying more costly vacations through travel agencies and cheaper ones online.

More than half of UK consumers avoid in-store travel agents altogether in order to completely book their holidays online.

French online travel revenue grew stronger between January and September 2011 than French total B2C E-Commerce revenue.

New airline rules yet to be enforced, even as DOT levies record fines

Back in August, you might recall, the Transportation Department adopted a set of tough new consumer-protection rules to help airline passengers. In January, it added even more.

But while industry observers were trying to figure out how the new regulations would alter air travel, almost no one noticed other developments that could significantly affect your next flight.

Girls in China commit suicide, dreaming of time travel

Two girls in eastern China have killed themselves after leaving suicide notes saying they were attempting to travel back in time, according to state-owned China Daily.

One of the fifth-grade girls had apparently lost the remote control for a garage door at her house on Thursday and told her friend about it.

Later that afternoon, the girls wrote suicide notes and proceeded to drown themselves in a pool, according to the paper.

The friend wrote in her note that the girl was afraid of getting in trouble for losing the remote control, and they decided to die together since they were best friends.

One of the girls wrote that her dream was to travel back to the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) to shoot a film and also to visit outer space.

TV series about time travel are increasingly popular in China, with story lines usually following people who accidently travel to the past, the paper reported.

Goodbye maps, hello apps: Planning travel on the go

Editors note: Editors note: Ayesha Durgahee is the resident reporter on CNNs Business Traveller. Follow Ayesha on Twitter at at @AyeshaCNN.

London (CNN) — Apps — those bite-sized portals to mass information and services — have not only revolutionized the way we communicate, but also how we travel and how we maximize our time on the road.

Tom Dunmore, creative director at Mediablaze, which runs app-review website Life of Android, says because apps are location sensitive, easy to use and constantly connected, they are the next stage of the internet.

Increasingly, well see people rely on apps in the way they previously relied on maps, guide books and indeed personal assistants, booking flights and hotels — all those things suddenly merged down into a mobile phone, he says.

This efficient experience is driving the growth of travel apps, where all sectors of the industry are responding to our appetite for arranging our travel online — digital DIY.

MRIs show optical issues in astronauts; is long-term travel at risk?

Studies recently concluded on astronauts who have flown long-term missions that could point to serious problems with prolonged exposure to microgravity. This adds to the list of physical concerns NASA is addressing when considering long-term space travel.

Astronauts who had flown Shuttle or ISS missions anywhere up to 108 days came back reporting changes in eyesight some worse, some better.

MRIs completed in the astronauts showed surprising results. Over a sampling of 27 astronauts who had flown long-term, they had a mix of problems ranging from deformities in their eyeballs and swelling of the optic nerves to changes in the pituitary glands.

These conditions mimic symptoms caused by a rare problem called intracranial hypertension, where pressure inside the skull rises and presses on the brain and eyes. For those astronauts who were already near-sighted, the pressure or flattening of the eyeballs actually corrected their vision. For others they werent so lucky.

A sampling of the group showed the flattening of the eyes created vision problems. Others had swelling of the optic nerve, which left unchecked could cause permanent damage. Even more compelling was the fact that the issues seem to get worse and more frequent the longer the stay in space was.

Doctors from the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in Houston, led by Dr. Larry Kramer performed the study and published their results in the journal Radiology.

In a press release Kramer notes: Microgravity-induced intracranial hypertension represents a hypothetical risk factor and a potential limitation to long-duration space travel. His hope is that by studying the problem now we can better understand just what causes it. By assessing the cause and risks, then scientists can determine whether the condition could be avoided or at best, treated.

These new findings are added to the list of problems that NASA medical teams have been aware of for some time bone loss and muscle shrinkage have been well documented.

And while NASA has not pulled any astronaut out of rotation due to these findings, it is taking a cautious approach. The space agency knows there are many physical issues that will need to be studied further before understanding how to deal with long-term space travel.

William J. Tarver, MD, MPH., chief of flight medicine clinic at NASA/Johnson Space Center, noted in a press release: NASA has placed this problem high on its list of human risks, has initiated a comprehensive program to study its mechanisms and implications, and will continue to closely monitor the situation.

Fortunately, astronauts from Europe, Russia, Japan and Canada will also be studied before and after flight missions so the research will be ongoing as we dream of missions to Mars and beyond.

Travel in and out of Canada falls in January

OTTAWA — Canadians made fewer trips outside the country in January, mainly same-day visits to the United States, Statistics Canada said Tuesday, even though overnight stops south of the border jumped.

Travel abroad by Canadian fell one per cent from December to five million trips, with residents making 4.2 million visits south of the border, a decline of 1.6%.

About 2.4 million those US trips in January were by car on the same-day journeys, down four per cent from the previous month. The decline follows a four per cent increase in December.

Overnight trips to the US were up 1.8% to 1.8 million in January. “This was the highest level recorded since record keeping began in 1972,” Statistics Canada said, with overnight plane trips to the US up 3.9% to 640,000 and overnight car travel rising 0.8% to almost 1.1 million trips.

At the same time, travel by Canadians to overseas destinations rose 2.4% to 776,000 trips, while foreign travel to Canada was mostly unchanged at two million trips in January.

The number of overall visits to Canada by US residents declined 3.8% during the month to 577,000 trips, although overnight stays were up 2.2% to 985,000.

Overnight car travel from the US to Canada edged up 0.4% to 562,000 trips, the highest level since December 2010, Statistics Canada said. Overnight plane travel increased 5.7% to 299,000 trips in January.

Trips by residents of countries other than the US were nearly flat at 389,000.

Overall travel to this country declined during January in seven of Canada’s top 12 markets, the federal agency said. Trips by residents of the United Kingdom –Canada’s most important overseas market — were down 2.7%, while travel from India fell 16 per cent. Travel from the Netherlands jumped 16.4%.
